The lost children of Hamburg

The hardship of people in Hamburg is almost indescribable. Despair, anxiety, hopelessness finally do. I have not seen this kind of poverty in either Southeast or Central Asia, neither in Arab countries, the Sahel, nor in Central or South America, nor in Eastern Europe. It is the hardship of the deepest, innermost poverty and the futility I have met in Hamburg.

At the beginning of this year I was able to test my winter jacket. With a few degrees below zero, it provides more warmth than I can bear - when I move. At minus 10 degrees Celsius it works well against the cold without sweating - with a maximum of two light layers of clothing underneath. In Hamburg I went with this jacket. And two light layers underneath. And another thick jumper besides. Feels like minus fifteen degrees Celsius - with a wind around thirty kilometers per hour and showers now and then. And there they lay on their thin sheets of cardboard, estimated five millimeters thin, on the road. German citizen. Poverty, an outward-one. Then in their eyes this emptiness. This deep-seated fear. No hope for improvement. No future.

In other parts of the world, most people in poverty realize that many others are not doing any better. But in western European Germany it is different. The people living on the streets see them all pass by; The Maserattis, Ferraris and Jaguars. They can hear the passersby talking about education, the past visit to the opera or the upcoming football game. This belongs to their world. But not into their world. They will never experience it. It is incredibly close to them - some less than a hundred steps away - but they are outcast forever.

How can we close our eyes and ears so hard? There are countless cities with hopeless and disorientated people in Europe, Hamburg is not the only town like this. Open your eyes and ears to your fellow citizens in your city and make a difference today.
